However, Simon Wyatt, our net zero jargon buster for this series, argues that when trying to understand a firm’s entire carbon footprint the Greenhouse Gas Protocol can help to provide the bigger picture on emissions.

He explains how the protocol breaks emissions into Scope 1 (direct use of fossil fuels), Scope 2 (indirect use of fossil fuels for energy such as electricity), and Scope 3 (all other indirect emissions including transportation, waste, purchased goods and services, investments).
