There is no sense of impending disaster in the pages of The Builder in the weeks leading up to the outbreak of the First World War in the summer of 1914. That is not surprising; it was not the job of a construction industry trade magazine to report on the frantic diplomatic manoeuvres of Europe’s great powers in the month that followed the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June of that year.
