How Building charted the rise of the Big Apple’s tallest pre-First World War skyscraper
The word ‘skyscraper’ was first used in the 1880s to describe a series of tall buildings in Chicago made possible by advances in steel frame construction. Although none of them were more than 20 storeys, city authorities deemed them unsightly and quickly set height limits for new buildings.
